This is the first of a series of podcasts that Niamh has recorded with an ECMR Associate and training and development specialist, Karen Chamberlain. In these podcasts, we look at the SCARF model and how it can help us in our interaction with others. In this first podcast, we introduce ourselves and the model itself.
Subsequent Podcasts will explore each of the five component parts of the model – Security, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness and Fairness. We will be explaining what they represent but also giving you examples how these elements of the model work in real life.
This brain-based model was developed by David Rock over 10 years ago, and explores the differences in people’s social motivation, with some people more sensitive to status, threat and rewards, others to certainty and relatedness. Understanding and responding to the needs of others drives engagement and retention in an organisation. It also helps us better connect with those around us.
